Plus research on solving the European energy crisis, a new net zero building, and some resources for developers...
Good morning,
Keeping it simple this week with niche news. Also, if you are in the industry and are looking for some resources for how to better plan and execute building efficiency, check out the resources below - having spoken with users, the leak-sensing tech and building planning tech not only saves headaches, but significant amounts of money.

Trends
Robots are (obviously) changing the construction industry
With the number of entry level construction workers dropping by 72.8% since 2011, there is a desperate need for newer, more efficient methods of construction. Luckily, modular construction (see Blokable, iUnit, Boxable, etc…) provides multifaceted solutions: scalable production, efficient construction, and tightened envelops leading to lower environmental impact.
Fun fact, on average, in 2020 modular construction saved 40% from the overall construction timeline.
Solving the European Energy Crisis
Europe’s energy crisis, which has been deeply compounded by the war in Ukraine, has individuals across the political spectrum creating ideas of the best ways to solve the crisis. A new McKinsey report finds that the two primary decisions that would be key to solving the current crisis while being financially feasible is to focus on renewable energy generation and the decarbonization of the current power supply.
Deals & Developments
Net-Zero mixed-use building officially opens in New Paltz, NY
Incorporating solar, geothermal heating and cooling, as well as a heat recovery and redistribution system, the development is operationally carbon neutral and seeking net-zero certification. Zero Place has already leased up its 46 residential units and 8,000 SF commercial space, demonstrating how low carbon technologies are financially feasible even in small towns.
Legislation
EV Infrastructure bill passes in New York
S23A will require that all new parking lots with more than 50 spaces will require at a minimum one EV charging station. Though a small step, this requirement is one of the several bills in the larger Environmental Protection Package being promoted across the NY senate.
Quick Takes (Resources today)
This week, I’m sharing some resources on sustainable technologies you can implement in the development process to help mitigate impact.
Wint is an AI-powered water detection service that notifies property owners when and where a leak is occurring and can even shut off the source if needed.
Cove.tool is another AI-powered tool that allows developers, architects, and engineers strategically plan and design buildings to optimize operational efficiency as it pertains to the environment.
Fact for Thought
The war on… noise?
Paris is so tired of loud streets and getting awoken at night, they’re deploying sensors that scan license plates of “noise polluters,” fining them upwards of €150. So best refrain from revving your engine at 3am (ahem neighbors).
